Computers: Tactical Tip #24: KVM Switches and You
In this case, KVM stands for Keyboard, Video, and Mouse. A KVM switch
allows you to connect two (or more) computers to the same keyboard, monitor,
and mouse. KVM switches vary by how many computers they can so connect, ranging
from two to eight or more. Also, KVM switches usually support either USB
(like this
Belkin)
or PS/2-style connectors (like this D-Link).
So, what are they good for? Here are three scenarios:
One customer has an application, written years and years ago, that simply
won't run on anything newer than Windows 98. The program is designed to use
a modem and dial out to read a water line flow meter, and Windows changed
the rules of how programs can work with modems starting with Windows 2000.
However, for daily use, a Windows 98 machine is starting to get a little
long in the tooth. So, we set the staff member up with a new PC, running
Windows XP, for normal use, and left the original Windows 98 PC there as
well. We use a KVM switch (the D-Link model) so she can use the Windows 98
PC from time to time without the extra clutter of another monitor and such,
and without having to crawl under a desk and move the keyboard and such
between computers.
KVM switches originally were used in server rooms, where there often
are more than one computer that only occasionally need to be directly
accessed. Since monitors, keyboards, and mice take up lots of desk space,
these server rooms switched to using KVM switches, so one station can operate
a bunch of servers.
If you are toying with taking the advice from the previous post
and try a Mac Mini, you could use a USB KVM switch to allow somebody to
bounce back and forth between the Mac and an existing PC. That's useful
during transition periods, and even afterwards for the occasional application
that isn't available in a Mac OS X version.
